What a difference a ‘U’ makes! Of course, I’m referring to “The Dog Days of Summer,” not "The Doug Days of Summer" although you’ll definitely find ‘Doug’ hanging out with Frank the ‘Dog’ on a beautiful summer day.
Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind “Dog Days of Summer?” I did a little digging and you may be surprised to learn that the expressions itself comes from the summer sky and has absolutely nothing to do with your pooch rolling in the grass on a warm day.
During ‘The Dog Days of Summer,” the brightest star in the sky, Sirius rests in the same region of the sky as the sun. Because Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog, July 3-August 11 each year is referred to as the “Dog Days of Summer!”
To celebrate, I’ve dug (Doug?) up a few of Frank’s favorite local summer activities just perfect for a dog. And a Doug!
THE PERFECT DOG-FRIENDLY WALNUT CREEK HIKES
We are fortunate to live adjacent to Shell Ridge Open Space, with a beautiful trail system circling ponds and streams with vistas you can't believe! From the top of the hill you can see from Walnut Creek downtown to the shimmering waters of Suisun Bay and beyond.
Frank's favorite trail is the easiest one--the Indian Trail Loop. He likes it because it's short. And somewhat shady. For his safety, we keep him on a leash. There are coyotes out there, so use care with your furry family member.
DOG-FRIENDLY DINING IN WALNUT CREEK
Walnut Creek is simply brimming with patio dining, suitable for a leashed, well-behaved dog, so it's hard to pick a favorite. Many establishments offer water for your pooch and greet him warmly.
But here's our tip: We love Taqueria Extra on Mt. Diablo. The patio dining is always shady and they have the best deal in town. From 3:00-6:00 pm on Monday-Friday, you can order three delicious street tacos brimming with all the fillings for just $5.00. They have six meat options, so order a double order and try them all.
It's almost too good to believe!
